BIOGRAPHY

Katie Gabriel is an American artist who grew up in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Texas in Arlington and her Master of Fine Arts in Painting at Colorado State University.

Gabriel’s visual style is a mix of classical training and low brow cynicism with an affinity towards bold colors, graphic patterning, and loose mark making.  Working in skate shops throughout her teens and early twenties, she was immersed in the culture surrounding that scene. Music, skateboarding, fashion, and photography have all influenced her deeply in the way that she thinks about and creates work.

In her work she blends a number of mediums to create scenes extracted from old family photos. She embraces the banal with a sense of comfort and mistrust, imbuing her characters and spaces with a familiarity that is simultaneously elusive.

Katie currently lives in Fort Collins, Colorado and is an Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood Colorado.
